Worked example
10 km in 55 minutes
- Pace = 55:00 ÷ 10 = 5:30 per km, or 8:51 per mile.
- Speed = 10.91 km/h.
- A 400 m lap at this pace takes 2:12.
What the result means
Easy runs are usually 60 to 90 seconds per km slower than race pace.

- Even pace across the distance.
Limitations
- GPS watches can misjudge distance by a few per cent.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good running pace?
For recreational runners, 6:00 to 7:30 per km is common; 5:00 per km or faster is quick.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Speed in km/h = 60 ÷ pace in minutes. 5:00 per km is 12 km/h.
What pace for a 1-hour 10K?
6:00 per km.
