Calories Burned Calculator

Every activity uses energy at some multiple of your resting rate, called its MET value. The Compendium of Physical Activities lists average values for hundreds of activities.

Results update as you type.

Calories burned

305 kcal

running, 8 km/h, 30 minutes

Per hour
610 kcal
MET value
8.3times resting energy use

Estimates from average MET values; fitness, effort and terrain change the real figure.

About this calculator

Choose an activity, enter your weight and how long you did it, and the calculator estimates the calories burned.

How to use it

  1. Choose the activity.
  2. Enter your weight.
  3. Enter the duration.

The formula

Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes
MET
metabolic equivalent of the activity
3.5
ml of oxygen per kg per minute at rest

Worked example

Running at 8 km/h for 30 minutes, 70 kg

  1. MET for running at 8 km/h is 8.3.
  2. Calories = 8.3 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 × 30 = 305 kcal.
  3. That is about 610 kcal an hour.

What the result means

Use these figures to compare activities rather than to count exact calories.

Assumptions

  • Average effort for each activity.

Limitations

  • Real calories depend on fitness, effort, terrain and technique.
