CGPA to Percentage Calculator

CGPA (cumulative grade point average) sums up your grades on a 10-point scale. Many forms, job applications and admissions still ask for a percentage, and the rule for converting depends on who awarded the CGPA.

Results update as you type.

Percentage

81.7%

CBSE (CGPA × 9.5)

Under CBSE rule (× 9.5)
81.7%
Under × 10 rule
86%

Use the rule your board or university prints on the marksheet or states in its rules. Different institutions use different formulas.

About this calculator

Choose the rule that applies to you. For CBSE results given in CGPA, the board’s indicative rule is to multiply by 9.5. Some institutions simply multiply by 10, and many universities publish their own formula, which you can enter as a multiplier and an adjustment.

How to use it

  1. Enter your CGPA.
  2. Choose the conversion rule your board or university uses.
  3. For a university formula, enter the multiplier and the adjustment.
  4. Read the percentage.

The formula

CBSE: % = CGPA × 9.5 Simple: % = CGPA × 10 University: % = a × CGPA + b
CGPA
your cumulative grade point average, out of 10
a, b
the multiplier and the amount added or subtracted in your university’s rule

Worked example

CGPA of 8.6

  1. CBSE rule: 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%.
  2. Simple × 10 rule: 8.6 × 10 = 86%.
  3. A university that uses 7.1 × CGPA + 11 would give 8.6 × 7.1 + 11 = 72.06%.

What the result means

The same CGPA can give quite different percentages under different rules, so always quote the rule your institution uses. When a form asks for a percentage and your marksheet gives a formula, use that formula.

If your institution states that no conversion applies, report the CGPA as it is and mention the scale, for example 8.6 out of 10.

Assumptions

  • The CGPA is on a 10-point scale.

Limitations

  • The calculator does not know your institution’s rule; you need to choose or enter it.
  • Some universities convert grade by grade or subject by subject rather than from the overall CGPA. In that case, follow their method.

Frequently asked questions

Why does CBSE use 9.5?

CBSE set 9.5 as an indicative factor for its CGPA results, based on the average percentage of students in the top grade band. It is meant as an approximate guide, not an exact conversion.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage for my university?

Look for the conversion rule on your marksheet, transcript or in the university’s ordinance, then choose “My university’s formula” and enter it.

Is SGPA converted the same way?

Usually yes, using the same rule as CGPA, but check your university’s instructions.
