The formula

Age = whole years + whole months + remaining days, counted forward from the date of birth

When a monthly anniversary falls on a date that does not exist, such as 31 June, the last day of that month is used.

Worked example

Born 10 March 1990, age on 29 September 2026

  1. Whole years: the 36th birthday was on 10 March 2026, so 36 years.
  2. Whole months since then: 10 March to 10 September is 6 months.
  3. Days left over: 10 September to 29 September is 19 days.
  4. Age: 36 years, 6 months and 19 days, which is 13,352 days in total.

What the result means

Counting years, then months, then days is the method most forms expect. Two people can have the same number of total days but different years-months-days, because months are not all the same length.

If a form asks for completed years, use only the years figure. Someone who is 17 years and 11 months has completed 17 years.

Assumptions

  • Dates follow the Gregorian calendar, including leap years.
  • For someone born on 29 February, the birthday in non-leap years is taken as 28 February.

Limitations

  • Time of birth and time zones are not considered, so the age changes at the start of the calendar day.
  • Some institutions count 29 February birthdays on 1 March, and some rules count age as on the day before the birthday. Follow the definition in your form’s instructions.
  • Dates before the Gregorian calendar was adopted locally may not match historical records.

How do I calculate age as on a specific date?

Change the second date from today to the date you need, such as the cut-off date in an exam notification. The result updates at once.

How are leap years handled?

Every day is counted using the real calendar, so leap days are included in the total. For a 29 February birthday, 28 February is used in years without a 29 February.

Why does my age in days not equal years × 365?

Because of leap years. Every fourth year adds a day, so 36 years is usually 13,149 days, not 13,140.

Is my date of birth stored anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to our server.
