About this calculator
The result is also shown in decimal hours, which is what you multiply by an hourly rate. The second mode adds or subtracts hours and minutes from a clock time and tells you if the answer falls on the next or previous day.
How to use it
- Type the times to add, separated by commas.
- Optionally type times to subtract.
- Read the total.
The formula
Total seconds = hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds, then converted back
- Decimal hours
- total seconds ÷ 3,600
Worked example
2:45 + 1:30 + 0:50
- Minutes: 45 + 30 + 50 = 125 = 2 hours 5 minutes.
- Hours: 2 + 1 + 0 + 2 = 5, so the total is 5:05, or 5.083 hours.
What the result means
5:30 means five and a half hours, which is 5.5 in decimal, not 5.3.
Assumptions
- Times are durations, written as hours:minutes or hours:minutes:seconds.
Limitations
- For the time between two clock times or dates, use the time difference calculator.
