Cement

14 bags

13.7 bags of 50 kg for 1.7 m³ of M20

Column concrete
1.7 m³ (60 cft)
Sand
0.71 m³ (25.2 cft)0.25 brass
Aggregate (gitti)
1.43 m³ (50.4 cft)0.5 brass
Water (approx.)

Nominal mixes are for estimating. Structural concrete should follow the engineer’s design mix. Add 3% to 5% for wastage.

About this calculator

Common house columns are 9 × 9, 9 × 12 or 12 × 12 inches.

How to use it

  1. Choose feet or metres and enter the dimensions.
  2. Choose the mix or materials.
  3. Read the quantities to order.

The formula

Volume = area of section × height × number; round: area = π × d² ÷ 4
section
the column’s cross-section

Worked example

Eight 9 × 12 inch columns, 10 ft high

  1. Area = 0.229 × 0.305 = 0.070 m².
  2. Volume = 0.070 × 3.05 × 8 = 1.70 m³ (60 cft).
  3. M20 needs about 14 bags of cement.

What the result means

Steel takes up a little space, but estimates usually ignore it.

Assumptions

  • Uniform columns.

Limitations

  • Column sizes and steel must follow a structural design.

Frequently asked questions

How much cement for a 9 × 12 column?

About 1.7 bags per 10 ft height in M20.

Is steel included?

No, only concrete materials.

What size column for a house?

It depends on loads and span; an engineer should decide.
