The formula
Bricks = brickwork volume ÷ volume of one brick with 10 mm mortar
- common brick
- 230 × 110 × 70 mm, 434 per m³
- modular brick
- 190 × 90 × 90 mm, 500 per m³
Worked example
A 20 × 10 ft full-brick wall, common bricks
- Brickwork = 18.58 m² × 0.24 m = 4.46 m³.
- Bricks = 4.46 × 434 = 1,935, or 2,033 with 5% wastage.
- Mortar at 1:6 needs about 5.6 bags of cement and 1.18 m³ of sand.
What the result means
Brick sizes vary between kilns; measure a few and use the closest option.
Assumptions
- 10 mm mortar joints.
Limitations
- Lintels, beams and openings must be deducted.
