About this calculator
Leave the ratio as 1 : 1 for the midpoint only.
How to use it
- Enter point A and point B.
- Optionally enter a ratio m : n.
- Read the points.
The formula
Midpoint = ((x₁ + x₂) ÷ 2, (y₁ + y₂) ÷ 2); section = ((m x₂ + n x₁) ÷ (m + n), (m y₂ + n y₁) ÷ (m + n))
- m : n
- the ratio AP : PB
Worked example
A(2, −3) and B(8, 5)
- Midpoint = ((2 + 8) ÷ 2, (−3 + 5) ÷ 2) = (5, 1).
- Dividing AB in 1 : 2 gives (4, −0.33).
What the result means
The centroid of a triangle is the average of its three corners.
Assumptions
- All lengths in the same unit.
Limitations
- Results are rounded to 10 significant figures.
Frequently asked questions

Average the x values and the y values.
What is the section formula?
((m x₂ + n x₁)/(m + n), (m y₂ + n y₁)/(m + n)).
Is the midpoint a 1 : 1 section?
Yes.
