Kinetic Energy Calculator

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. It depends on the square of speed, so speed matters far more than mass.

Kinetic energy grows with the square of speed: double the speed and it becomes four times as large.

About this calculator

Find energy, speed or mass, in joules, kJ, calories or kWh.

How to use it

  1. Choose what to find, enter the other values with their units, and read the answer in every common unit.

The formula

KE = ½ × m × v²
m
mass
v
speed

Worked example

A 1,000 kg car at 60 km/h

  1. 60 km/h = 16.67 m/s.
  2. KE = ½ × 1,000 × 16.67² = 1,38,889 J, about the energy of a 14 m fall.

What the result means

Double the speed and the energy is four times as much, which is why stopping distances grow so fast.

Assumptions

  • Speeds far below the speed of light.

Limitations

  • Rotational energy of wheels is not included.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for kinetic energy?

KE = ½mv², with mass in kg and speed in m/s for joules.

Why does speed matter so much?

Because it is squared.

Can kinetic energy be negative?

No.
