Acceleration Calculator

Acceleration is how quickly velocity changes. Enter the starting and final velocity and the time taken, or solve for any one of them.

Results update as you type.

Acceleration

2.7777778 m/s²

Distance covered
138.889 ms = (u + v) ÷ 2 × t
In g
0.283251 g = 9.80665 m/s²
In g (9.80665 m/s²)
0.2832545 g
In ft/s²

A negative acceleration means slowing down (deceleration).

About this calculator

The calculator also gives the distance covered while accelerating and the acceleration in g.

How to use it

  1. Choose what to find, enter the other values with their units, and read the answer in every common unit.

The formula

a = (v − u) ÷ t; v = u + at; s = (u + v) ÷ 2 × t
u
initial velocity
v
final velocity
t
time
a
acceleration

Worked example

A car from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 s

  1. 100 km/h = 27.78 m/s.
  2. a = 27.78 ÷ 10 = 2.78 m/s², about 0.28 g; it covers 138.9 m.

What the result means

A negative acceleration means slowing down. 1 g (9.81 m/s²) is the acceleration of free fall.

Assumptions

  • Constant acceleration.

Limitations

  • Real vehicles accelerate unevenly, so this gives the average.

Frequently asked questions

What is the unit of acceleration?

Metres per second squared (m/s²).

What is deceleration?

Negative acceleration: the final velocity is lower than the initial one.

What are the equations of motion?

v = u + at, s = ut + ½at² and v² = u² + 2as, for constant acceleration.
