About this calculator
Find any one of the four values.
How to use it
- Choose what to find, enter the other values with their units, and read the answer in every common unit.
The formula
P₁ × V₁ = P₂ × V₂
- P₁, V₁
- initial pressure and volume
- P₂, V₂
- final pressure and volume
Worked example
6 L of gas at 1 atm compressed to 3 atm
- V₂ = 1 × 6 ÷ 3 = 2 L.
What the result means
A syringe with a blocked end shows Boyle’s law: pushing the plunger raises the pressure.
Assumptions
- Constant temperature and amount of gas.
Limitations
- Ideal gas behaviour.
Frequently asked questions
What does Boyle’s law state?
At constant temperature, pressure × volume is constant for a fixed amount of gas.
Can I mix units?
Yes, each value has its own unit.
Is it the same as PV = nRT?
It is a special case with n and T constant.
