  2. Choose your age group.
  3. For the old regime, enter your deductions.
  4. Compare the tax under each regime.

Worked example

Salary ₹15 lakh, other income ₹50,000

  1. New regime: taxable ₹14,75,000; slab tax ₹1,01,250; with cess ₹1,05,300.
  2. Old regime with ₹1.5 lakh 80C and ₹25,000 health insurance: taxable ₹13,25,000; tax with cess ₹2,18,400.
  3. The new regime saves ₹1,13,100 here.

What the result means

For most salaried people the new regime is now lower unless deductions are large, typically a big home loan, high rent and full 80C together.

Salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax in the new regime: ₹75,000 standard deduction brings it to ₹12 lakh, and the rebate covers the rest.

Assumptions

  • Resident individual.
  • Income other than capital gains taxed at slab rates.

Limitations

  • Capital gains at special rates, agricultural income and losses carried forward are not included.
  • Deduction limits are applied as described; check eligibility for your case.
  • Section numbers changed in the new Act; 80C-style names are used here because they are familiar.

Frequently asked questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in 2026-27?

Yes in the new regime, for resident individuals: the rebate covers tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. Salaried people get ₹75,000 standard deduction on top, so up to ₹12.75 lakh of salary is tax-free.

What if my income is just above ₹12 lakh?

Marginal relief applies: your tax cannot be more than the income above ₹12 lakh. On ₹12,10,000 taxable income, tax is ₹10,000 plus cess, not ₹61,500.

Did Budget 2026 change the slabs?

No. The slabs, rebate, standard deduction, surcharge and cess are the same as 2025-26.

Which regime should I choose?

Whichever gives lower tax. This calculator shows both; salaried people can tell their employer at the start of the year.
