Worked example
Tax of ₹2,40,000 with ₹60,000 of TDS
- Advance tax = ₹1,80,000.
- Pay ₹27,000 by 15 June, ₹54,000 by 15 September, ₹54,000 by 15 December and ₹45,000 by 15 March.
What the result means
Paying late or too little attracts interest of 1% a month on the shortfall, so pay a little extra if unsure.

- Your estimate of yearly tax stays the same.
Limitations
- Interest for shortfalls is not calculated.
- Capital gains arising late in the year can be paid in the remaining instalments.
Frequently asked questions
Who must pay advance tax?
Anyone whose tax for the year, after TDS, is ₹10,000 or more, except resident senior citizens without business income.
What are the advance tax due dates?
15 June (15%), 15 September (45%), 15 December (75%) and 15 March (100%), cumulative.
Do salaried people pay advance tax?
Usually not, because TDS covers it, unless they have other income such as rent, interest or capital gains.
