About this calculator
Because the four best-known formulas give slightly different answers, the calculator shows all of them, plus the healthy range from BMI using Indian cut-offs, which is wider and better suited to everyday use.
How to use it
- Choose your sex.
- Enter your height.
- Compare the formulas with the healthy range.
The formula
- Robinson
- men 52 + 1.9, women 49 + 1.7 per inch
- Miller
- men 56.2 + 1.41, women 53.1 + 1.36 per inch
- Hamwi
- men 48 + 2.7, women 45.5 + 2.2 per inch
Worked example
A man 170 cm tall
- 170 cm is 66.9 inches, 6.9 inches over 5 feet.
- Formulas give 65.2 kg (Robinson) to 66.7 kg (Hamwi); Devine gives 65.9 kg.
- The healthy BMI range for Indians at this height is 53.5 to 66.2 kg.
What the result means
Use the BMI-based range as the main guide; any weight inside it is healthy for most adults. The formulas sit near its top for men.
Assumptions
- Adult height.
Limitations
- Formulas ignore frame size and muscle; athletes may weigh more and be healthy.
- They were designed for heights above 5 feet.
Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal weight for my height?
Any weight within the healthy BMI range is fine for most adults. The formulas here give a single figure near the middle-to-top of that range.
Why do the formulas differ?
They were built from different data sets and purposes. The spread shows how rough any single target is.
Is ideal weight different for Indians?
The formulas are the same, but Indian BMI guidelines use a lower upper limit (22.9), so the healthy range ends lower.
