Dilution Calculator

Diluting a stock solution keeps the amount of solute the same, so concentration × volume stays constant.

About this calculator

Find the stock volume to take, the final volume, or either concentration. Use any concentration unit, as long as both match.

How to use it

  1. Choose what to find, enter the other values with their units, and read the answer in every common unit.

The formula

C₁ × V₁ = C₂ × V₂
C₁, V₁
stock concentration and volume
C₂, V₂
final concentration and volume

Worked example

Making 200 mL of 0.5 M from 2 M stock

  1. V₁ = 0.5 × 200 ÷ 2 = 50 mL.
  2. Add 150 mL of solvent: a 4× dilution.

What the result means

Always add acid to water, never water to concentrated acid.

Assumptions

  • Volumes add up exactly.

Limitations

  • Mixing some liquids, such as ethanol and water, changes total volume slightly.

Frequently asked questions

What is M1V1 = M2V2?

The same formula written with molarity.

What is a dilution factor?

Final volume ÷ stock volume.

Can I use percentages?

Yes, if both concentrations are in percent.
